In rail transport, a train is a vehicle or (more frequently) a string of vehicles capable of being moved along a continuous line of rails or other guideway for the purpose of conveying freight or passengers between points on a predetermined route. The train may be hauled or propelled by one or more vehicles designed exclusively for that purpose (locomotives) or may be driven by a number of motors incorporated in all or several of the vehicles (multiple units).

As of 2018, there are approximately 1,052,000 kilometres (654,000 mi) of railway track in use worldwide. (World Bank (via Archive.org))

Berg station in March 2006

Berg is a station on the Sognsvann Line (line 3) of the Oslo Metro in Norway. It is located between Ullevål stadion and Tåsen stations and is the first station after the Ring Line leaves the Sognsvann Line. The station is located 6.1 kilometres (3.8 mi) from Stortinget station. Berg is amongst the original stations on the line, and was opened on 10 October 1934. It was upgraded and rebuilt in the 1990s, when the Sognsvann Line was upgraded from light rail to rapid transit standard. Three accidents have happened at Berg station, latest in 2008. The area around the station is mainly residential. Berg Upper Secondary School is located approximately 100 metres (330 ft) from the station.

A railroad torpedo in use

Prior to working on the track, work crews strapped torpedoes like this to the rail using the soft, lead straps. This device was strapped to the rail about 0.25 to 0.5 miles (0.40 to 0.80 km) from the work site. They would be placed in a pattern so that when an oncoming train ran over the torpedoes, the train crew would hear a bam...then bam, bam, or some pattern like that to alert them to the work crew ahead. The bang was so loud that the work crew could hear it too, alerting them to a train approaching. Once the track work was done for the day, the track crew removed the torpedoes prior to leaving the work site.
